Two lifts at MRT stations where possible

We thank Mr Tony Wee Gim Leong for his feedback on lift service at MRT stations (Seniors struggle when lifts at train stations don't work, Nov 4). We agree that lifts in MRT stations are important to the elderly and those with mobility issues. On Mr Wee's suggestion to have more than one lift in each station, the Land Transport Authority has provided for two lifts for future lines, where technically possible. The lift at Bukit Batok station was put ou......

Seniors struggle when lifts at train stations don't work

After alighting from the train at Bukit Batok MRT station recently, my wife and I learnt to our dismay that the lift at the platform was under maintenance. An old man in a wheelchair and his helper waited by the lift for the workers to be done. They looked at us in despair. My wife is 68 years old and I am 70. We usually take the lift or the escalator, not the stairs. MRT operators should take into consideration the needs of the elderly and those with mobility issue......

Have more seats on trains to cater to older riders

Mr Lester Wong and others should be applauded for helping the woman who fell in the train (He took care of passenger who fell in crowded train, Oct 24). But more should be done by train operators to prevent such incidents. Some people may have illnesses that are not plainly visible - heart issues, sciatica, back or leg issues, or cancer - and others may not give up their seats to them. Moreover, some people who are unwell may be too embarrassed to ask for one.......

Cost-fare revenue gap too big to bridge

Mr Paul Chan Poh Hoi's letter (Poor planning - root cause behind SMRT Trains' losses, Aug 5) contained two inaccuracies. First, he claimed that: "Just last year, SMRT reported that it could recover 101 per cent of spending from fare box collections." span style="font-s......

More discretion needed during random checks

The Public Transport Security Command officers who stopped Forum contributor Carl Tay for a random check should have shown some respect for his right to privacy, and probably checked his belongings in a more secluded area or corner of the MRT station (Explain protocol for random checks, May 24). I cannot imagine how much more embarrassing and intrusive it would have been if the commuter who was checked was a woman. Personal feminine or ......

Explain protocol for random checks

Recently, I was stopped for a random check by the Public Transport Security Command officers outside Aljunied MRT station. An officer asked me for a form of identification, while another officer asked to check my wallet. While inspecting the contents of my wallet, the officer asked if I had "anything to declare". As I did not know what the check was for, I asked him: "What are the things I should be declaring?" Without an......

Renewal of bus services needed too

It is heartening to see that the North-East Line is going for a major renewal this year (NEL to undergo major renewal from January; Dec 17, 2018). The maintenance and upgrading of the MRT lines are critical. Many Singaporeans depend on the public transport system to travel. But, we should not forget about the buses. The bus contractin......

Simple tweaks that could make MRT more efficient

Recently, transport correspondent Christopher Tan rightly pointed out that despite all the investments in rail and bus infrastructures, the percentage of bus and train journeys under 20km completed within 60 minutes has hardly changed from the 79 per cent a decade ago (Time to tackle travelling time; Sept 1). I recall seeing SMRT billboards saying that its upgrading works will result in commuters reaching home earlier to enjoy more personal time. The reality is that......

Improve signage in MRT stations

Welcome to the new CEO of SMRT. I suggest that SMRT should work with LTA to improve the signage in MRT stations.  Some suggesions: a) The Way Out sign should be visible to the passenger who steps out of the train. b) The Toilet sign should be visible in all parts of the station. c) The signs for the Exits should be continuous until the passenger leaves the Exit. Many passengers have been lost while walking to the Exi......

I recently spotted more and more blue coloured co-sharing electric scooters parked messily in public locations. I did some research and found out theyare invested in by SMRT. I am all for the SMART CITY initiative and laud SMRT for innovating but I believe: - We should solve the e-scooter safety issues and bicycle nuisance before spreading them all over the island in such a messy manner. - SMRT should focus on rectifying ......

Now that I am pregnant, only I realized that SMRT you are doing not enough/ doing very little/ insignificant effort in helping pregnant women traveling on public transit. By pregnant I mean all pregnant women, no matter which trimester they are in and mind you it is not defined by how big the expectant mother's tummy is. Often time pregnant women in first trimester are those that are most vulnerable and most neglected group of people. First trimester is when morning sick......

i wish to compliment SMRT for displaying the name of the next bus stop in their buses.  This is helpful to passengers who are not familiar with the route or when they travel at night and on rainy days and are not able to look for the landmarks. I suggest that SMRT should show the sequence number of the bus stop in addition to the name. The sequence number start with 1 on leaving the terminal and increases by 1 for each subsequent stop.  This......
