Tan Kin Lian - Perspectives
Review - Future for Young People in Singapore
Mr. Tan Kin Lian's Future for Young People in Singapore is a must-read for anyone who cares deeply about the future of our country. Whether you are a student, a young person looking to build a successful career, a parent looking to support your children, or a concerned citizen seeking to make a difference, this eBook is an invaluable resource that will empower you to champion a better future for Singapore.
What I appreciate most about this eBook is Mr Tan's clear and concise writing style. He uses basic language to illustrate complex ideas, making the book accessible to the ordinary layman.
Moreover, one of the things I found most impactful is his emphasis on the positive side of things. While he acknowledges the many obstacles young people face in the present era, he also highlights the many opportunities for those who are willing to work hard & think outside-the-box.
From entrepreneurship to education to national service, Mr Tan offers a plethora of practical advice to help the youth maximize their fullest potential.

I really connected with this book because it felt like it was talking directly to me. It's all about how to survive and thrive in modern Singapore, and that's something I'm trying to figure out every day.
One thing I wasn't too keen on was the parts about politics and government policies. I mean, there's not much I can do about that stuff as an individual. But I appreciated that the book explained the nitty-gritty of the cost of living in Singapore. It opened my eyes to why things can get so expensive.
What I liked most about this book was its relatability. It's like having a friendly conversation with someone who gets what you're going through. So, if you're looking for practical advice on tackling life in Singapore, this book's got your back. It's like having a mentor who's been through it all and is ready to share their wisdom with you.

Future for Young People is a must-read for all young Singaporeans in this rapidly changing world. He emphasises what the generation that will be the backbone of Singapore’s economy will feel and experience in years to come. His background really inspired me as I am sure it would be relatable to the majority of Singaporeans which is: Being born in a low to middle class family and working your way up in society through meritocracy. However, as bleak as it may be, the disparity between the rich and the poor will only manifest itself more apparently over time.
This book is not a blueprint of how one should navigate in life, but rather he shared experiences on the uncertainties he faced as a youth from social pressures such as marriage and raising children in this competitive world to fundamental issues he observes now such as job prospects to the price of housing and cars which is viscerally relatable to majority of young people.
I agree with most, if not, all of his analysis as a 19 year old. First, the issue of employment structure where skilled graduates are not given sufficient opportunities to work in a dignified job in accordance with their qualifications. Secondly, the cost of housing, he empathises that many are not born with wealthy parents and do not have the luxury of financial aid. This is very relatable and buying HDB flats seems like an insurmountable task. Lastly, he recognises that cost of living is skyrocketing while anecdotal evidence suggested that most are earning below the median wage.
He ends the book with a beacon of hope for our future, through his well thought-out and valid solutions that policy makers should consider for the betterment of a just and equal society in Singapore.
