PE 2023 - Endorsements

Endorsement by Robert Axelrod

I endorse 2023 Presidential candidate Tan Kin Lian.

Tan Kin Lian's life is the Singapore story: About charting one's own path, forging new ways forward. Not because it is the easy way but because it is the right way, and for those with dedication, character, faith, and conviction, sometimes that lonely path paves the way forward for thousands, even millions, of people.

When I first read about Tan Kin Lian online and later on his blog, I thought he was nuts. He was talking much about NS and the taxation system in Singapore, but more and more I found myself agreeing wit h his positions. Tan Kin Lian is willing to do things that other people are not willing to do because his convictions are so deep. His passion is born of a deep and abiding conviction that these are correct principles, standing for tax freedom and economic liberty, he stands for the traditional Singapore values that had made this country great in the first place.

He has been talking about these things for 20 years, and he has not wavered or buckled even when he had to stand alone. If you want honesty and integrity, look no further to Tan Kin Lian and that is based on his faith and based on his belief in the Constitution.

I have always put Singapore politicians in 2 categories -- They are either here to make a point, or they are here to make a difference. A real conservative, Tan Kin Lian is the only candidate who believes the Singapore Government is spending t oo much, and Singaporeans are taxed too much. All these are bankrupting our country. He is the only one I know who made a difference by making a point that we need lower taxes, less regulations and we need to free up the market.

While former Senior Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam is still in the lead, Singaporean voters still seem desperate for an alternative -- there is always another candidate pulling stronger or almost as strong numbers among the general public.

As a former Chief Executive Officer of NTUC Income, Tan Kin Lian was never in parliament. Thus he has never voted for all of the bad deals that have riled up young and old Singaporeans alike in recent years. The most fiscally conservative among the 3 candidates, Tan Kin Lian is well aware of the constitutional role of the President, and he believes in following the Presidential twin duties of legislation as defined in the Constitution, guarding the reserves and protecting the public offices. His consistent theme and prediction that Singapore can no longer afford the economic cost of our commitments makes many local MSM commentators uncomfortable, possibly by the very truth of the assertion.

For two decades Tan Kin Lian has been that rare sort of activist who speaks what he believes to be the truth and does not flutter in the wind of public opinion. That could not be said of Tharman Shanmugaratnam or Ng Kok Song.

The longer we go, we get the more apparent after all these years whether Singaporeans want to admit it or not -- Tan Kin Lian has changed the conversation about what it means to be a President. Powerful leaders like Ong Teng Cheong had changed the political landscape. This is what Tan Kin Lian would do for our country and why I support him.
