China Recent dispute between China and Philippines over the Spratly Islands
My friend asked me why is China taking a tough stance towards the Philippines in the recent dispute in the Spratly Islands in the South China Sea.

I said that China is responding to the recent decision by the Philippines to allow America to use the military bases in the Philippines.

However, I disagree with the approach taken by China, as they are seen to be "bullying" the Filipino fishermen who were trying to make a living. It is better for China to adopt a soft approach.

In due course, America and the Philippines will find their military alliance to be costly and a burden.

My friend agreed with me and told me this story from ancient Chinese history.

During the Shang Dynasty (1600-1046 BCE), the king of the Zhou Dynasty, King Wen, sought to establish friendly relations with the Shang Dynasty and its people. King Wen understood that a military confrontation with the powerful Shang Dynasty would be difficult and costly. Instead of resorting to force, he adopted a strategy of peaceful coexistence and cultural assimilation.

King Wen, known for his wisdom and benevolence, encouraged his scholars and officials to study and adopt the customs, traditions, and rituals of the Shang Dynasty. He learned from their governance system and respected their cultural practices, establishing a foundation of mutual understanding and respect.

Over time, King Wen's soft approach and genuine interest in the Shang Dynasty gained him popularity among the people. The Shang Dynasty's king, Di Xin, became increasingly despotic and unpopular due to his oppressive rule. Seeing the contrasting leadership styles, the people of Shang started to admire King Wen and his benevolent governance.

Eventually, Di Xin's tyrannical rule led to a rebellion within the Shang Dynasty, and the people turned to King Wen and his son, Wu, for support and guidance. King Wen's reputation as a just and virtuous ruler, along with his soft approach, had won over the hearts of the Shang Dynasty's people. They saw him as a more favorable alternative to their despotic ruler.

The rebellion against the Shang Dynasty succeeded with the assistance of the Zhou forces, and King Wu established the Zhou Dynasty, which lasted for over eight centuries. This event, known as the "Overthrow of the Shang Dynasty," marked a turning point in ancient Chinese history.

King Wen's soft approach towards the Shang Dynasty, characterized by cultural assimilation and benevolent governance, played a significant role in winning over the opponent and its people. It showcased the power of diplomacy, wisdom, and respect in resolving conflicts and gaining the support of the populace.
