Impose cap on how much insurers can raise premiums

I purchased two insurance policies from an insurance company some time back. My premiums for both policies doubled to over $700 last year when I was 42 years old. This year, it cost me a total of $1,367, though I have never utilised either policy. According to the insurance company, the adjustment is necessary to keep up with the latest claims experience and medical inflation and that "the claim experience has seen an increase of 22 per cent per annum......

Mental illness - No insurance application rejected outright

We thank Dr Desmond Wai for his letter (Patients with mental illnesses face insurance obstacles, Oct 10) and agree with a number of the points made. A multi-pronged approach to treatment is needed in order to help patients suffering from mental illnesses in conjunction with other medical problems. Life insurers have introduced various forms of coverage for mental illness, including Integrated Shield Plans (IPs), Critical Illness policies that provide coverage for me......

Make insurance coverage compulsory for PMD riders

Madam Yeo Eng Koong, a victim of an accident involving a personal mobility device (PMD), incurred medical expenses of about $18,000 and her dental surgery required another $4,900 (Encounter with PMD rider left woman with 30 stitches, Sept 13). It was not reported if the rider, Tham Chee Boon, had borne the cost or had third-party liability insurance to cover it. Life has changed for the worse for Madam Yeo, just 53 years old, who still has frequent headaches and tir......

Insurance firms should pay victims of drink-driving cases

It is preposterous that insurance companies do not pay claims arising from drink-driving accidents (Tough for victims to make claims in drink driving cases, March 19). What is the point in purchasing insurance, which is supposedly to protect us, when as defenceless victims we don't get full res......

Insurance claim rejected due to odd clause

Recently, I bought travel insurance with an added sports coverage from Chubb Insurance before I went mountain biking with my family in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Unfortunately, my 14-year-old son fell and landed on his ribs. We did not see a doctor in Chiang Mai as it didn't seem that bad. When we returned to Singapore, as a precautionary measure, I brought him to the doctor for a consultation. However, when I submitted the claim to Chubb, it was rejected ......

Take action against workshops that submit inflated claims

My recent experience has made me raise serious questions about how the motor insurance industry operates. I am not surprised that our motor insurance claims have been escalating (Insurance claims point to more serious road accidents; Sept 26). Recently, I had a minor incident at a carpark. I had to squeeze my car behind another car to free up space for others to park and, in the very tight manoeuvre, I gently touched the back of his bumper. There were no scratches or any signs of ......
